Election night: where the numbers come from

Every number on television tonight starts on a county or state election office page. This page links those pages and explains why they move.

Why results change

Counties report in batches: election-day precincts first in some states, mail ballots first in others. Early leads can flip either way without anything being wrong.
Mail ballots postmarked by election day are still counted after it in several states, by their own law.
Provisional ballots are checked and added later.
"Called" races are projections by news organisations, not official outcomes. The official outcome is the certified count.
